Plane crashes at Terre Haute airport with two aboard

RUPIRUPICELLEB - A World War II era plane crashed at Terre Haute Regional Airport around 2 p.m. Thursday north of the runways, near State Road 42 and Chamberlain Street.

The aircraft was traveling alongside two other former military planes from the Tri-State Warbird Museum near Cincinnati, Ohio.

While landing, the plane clipped the fence and flipped over, the Terre Haute Airport said in a press release.

The co-pilot had exited the plane by the time airport personnel arrived, but the pilot was still trapped inside.

The pilot suffered minor injuries and was lifelined to an Indianapolis hospital, the Terre Haute Police Department said. The pilot is safe and was hospitalized "out of an abundance of caution," the museum confirmed in an update.

The plane was a WWII-era torpedo bomber plane, a Grumman TBF Avenger. It was one of three making a stop to meet up with attendees for the TBM Reunion in Peru, Illinois.

This plane was the second in the formation. The first plane landed without incident, and the third was rerouted to the Sullivan County Airport.

Regional airport authorities, the Terre Haute Police Department, Indiana State Police, Terre Haute Fire Department, Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Seeleyville Fire Department, and TransCare responded to the crash, according to the Terre Haute Police Department.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
